Bajio sunglass lenses
Which sunglass color do you choose for operating a wakeboat? Why? Courtesy Bajio Sunglasses

No matter what type of boater you are, you should consider a quality pair of polarized sunglasses to be essential safety gear. Not just for how they reduce glare, but for how they protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays as well. Sunglasses-makers now offer myriad lens colors to choose from, but you shouldn’t pick based only on style. The different lens colors provide different benefits depending on how and where you boat. We picked just three different lens colors from Bajio Sunglasses selection, paired with the new Darien frames, to illustrate the differences.

Bajio blue lenses
Blue lenses work best on bright sunny days, on clear or blue water. Courtesy Bajio Sunglasses

Blue Lenses

The Clear: These are best for bright, sunny days offshore. They are ideal for offshore boaters who spend a lot of time roaming far outside the inlet, especially for long days in glaring sunlight. Designed, in Bajio’s words, to “spot fish in 50-plus feet of water,” they’re also great for helping to spot other boats, hazards and offshore markers in the distance.

The Glare: They block more light than other choices, so they’re not ideal at dawn and dusk, or in overcast situations where you still need eye protection.

Price: $259 (for glass lenses); bajiosunglasses.com

Bajio green lenses
Green sunglass lenses work best on lakes with brown or green water. Courtesy Bajio Sunglasses

Green Lenses

The Clear: Green is a more all-around lens that works in a variety of boating situations, but it is ideally suited for the coastal boater running in “greener” inshore waters. It has an amber base to help make out changing water depths and partially submerged hazards that you can encounter. They work well in various light conditions and can offer more contrast in low-light situations.

The Glare: They still reduce glare and protect against eyestrain, but they don’t block as much light as the blue lenses.

Bajio copper lenses
For low light, like the first or last runs of the day…or on overcast days, copper lenses may prove best. Courtesy Bajio Sunglasses

Copper Lenses

The Clear: Copper is often the choice of long-haulers for road driving because they offer a lot of high-contrast polarization. These work the best in low-light situations at dusk and dawn, and are preferred by many freshwater anglers in small river and lake situations. So they’d be well-suited for freshwater boaters. Anglers like them because they help in spotting fish in less-than-clear water. They’re also good on cloudy days.

The Glare: Copper doesn’t create the same “HD pop” as some of the other lens colors.

Price: $259 (for glass lenses); bajiosunglasses.com

Bajio Darien sunglasses
The Bajio Darien comes in a variety of lens and frame colors and you can also choose between polycarbonate and glass lenses. Courtesy Bajio Sunglasses

Editor’s Note: Jill Roberts is a writer and entrepreneur from Connecticut.

I tested the Darien in the light blue water matte frame with rose mirror lenses.

I was impressed right out of the box. These aren’t flimsy or cheaply made frames, I could tell they’re well-crafted and feel their durability.

I chose the glass lenses. Darien also comes in polycarbonate lenses for a little less money.

I’ve worn these almost daily for the last three months. They’ve become my go-to sunglasses for outdoor activities.

Bajio defines the Darien as a medium fit with a full wrap. The frames are contoured well to fit securely on my head, even in gusty wind, and the wide temples effectively block sun from the sides. Noticeable too, is that they don’t slide down my nose under the intense sun. Compared to other polarized lenses I’ve used, these deliver a noticeably sharper and more vibrant view with excellent glare reduction. While the style might not be the most flattering, I’ve found function and performance tend to matter most for sport-focused sunglasses.

Read Next: Check out our gear page!

The included storage box is a little cumbersome to open and close, so I’ve opted to use the draw string microfiber bag Baijo also provided. I find this more convenient and less bulky for everyday use.

Overall, I found the Darien sunglasses to be well-made, comfortable, and highly effective in bright outdoor conditions.

Ropes for wakeboarding and wakesurfing
Choosing a rope, or handle, for wakeboarding (top) demands different criteria than selecting a rope for wakesurfing (bottom). Learn the basic differences in this article. Kevin Falvey

Those just starting out in watersports need to sort out many differences between the different disciplines. Boat speed, boards, bindings, boots, and more, will vary in seeking the optimal experience. Ropes–often called “Handles”– are part of that process of discovery.

In this article, you’ll learn the basic differences between a wakeboard rope and a wakesurf rope.

Ronix Combo 5.0 rope
At 80-feet in total length, the Ronix Combo 5.0 is an ideal wakeboard rope and handle suited to accommodate riders of all ability levels and provide a comfortable feel on the water. At the most basic level, a wakeboard rope and handle serves as a connection between the rider and the boat. The Ronix Combo 5.0 is much more than that. A high-end rope and handle package such as this makes for a greater riding experience thanks to its techy handle, non-stretch line, and tons of other innovative features. Courtesy Ronix

Wakeboard Rope

  • Length: Typically 65–75 feet long (sometimes longer).
  • Stretch: Usually low-stretch or no-stretch (e.g., Spectra or Dyneema) to give the rider consistent tension for tricks and jumps.
  • Handle: Similar to water ski handles, about 13–15 inches wide, with a comfortable grip for two hands.
  • Purpose: Designed for riding at higher speeds and performing aerial tricks behind the boat at a distance.

Liquid Force Wakesurf Combo Handle Surf Rope
The Liquid Force Wakesurf Combo Handle Surf Rope offers an 8-inch handle which includes a molded EVA grip to keep your hands comfortable and attached floats so that it stays on top of the water. The rope is 24-feet long and is constructed of a polypro main line that is durable and fade resistant. Three 4-foot sections make it easy to adjust the length of the rope based on where you are attaching it in the boat and the length over your wave. Courtesy Liquid Force

Wakesurf Rope

  • Length: Much shorter — typically 20–25 feet.
  • Stretch: Often slightly stretchy for smoother pulls.
  • Handle: Usually a smaller, padded handle or a thick braided section to prevent injury (e.g., no long handlebar to avoid arm entanglement).
  • Purpose: Designed for low-speed riding close to the boat (in the surf wake) — once you’re up and riding, you often toss the rope.

Hyperlite ZERO2 binding
The Hyperlite ZERO2 binding represents state of the art and features heat-formable EVA liners for a custom fit. Price at time of publication? $650 Courtesy Hyperlite

Boots… bindings…the ever-important interface between you and your board can make a big difference in how you ride. The more advanced a rider you are, the more particular you will be about these critical connections. For those still on the learning curve we present this primer, which should start you off right on your wakeboard binding, boot, or boot/ binding purchase journey.

1. Fit & Comfort

  • Snug but not painful – Should hold your foot securely without pressure points.
  • Try them on if possible – Everyone’s feet are different; even high-end boots might not suit your foot shape.
  • Liners – Heat-moldable liners can offer a custom fit

 2. Flex (Stiffness)

  • Stiff boots – Offer better response and control, preferred by advanced riders.
  • Soft boots – More forgiving and comfortable, ideal for beginners or park riders.

 3. Closure System

  • Laces with locks – Simple and adjustable.
  • BOA dials – Quick and precise tightening.
  • Velcro straps – Fast and easy, sometimes combined with other systems.
  • Hybrid systems – Offer best of both worlds (e.g., BOA + laces).

 4. Mounting Compatibility

  • Check with your board – Make sure the boots fit your board’s mounting system (6” plate, M6 inserts, etc.).
Connelly Hale binding
The Connelly Hale is a versatile, open-toed design great for sharing by a variety of riders, such as a family. Price at time of publication? $219. Courtesy Connelly

5. Style: Open Toe vs Closed Toe

  • Open toe – More versatile in sizing, better for sharing, but less precise fit.
  • Closed toe – Better response, warmer, more secure fit for aggressive riding.

6. Support & Cushioning

  • Good ankle support – Reduces risk of injury.
  • Shock pads/gel inserts – Help absorb hard landings and reduce fatigue.

 7. Intended Use

  • Boat riding – Stiffer boots for better response at higher speeds.
  • Cable park – Softer, more flexible boots for style and mobility.

 8. Budget

  • High-end boots – More tech, lighter weight, better materials.
  • Entry-level boots – Great for learning but might lack longevity or advanced features.

Cable Park Wakeboard vs. Boat Wakeboard https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/gear/cable-park-wakeboard-vs-boat-wakeboard/ Wed, 14 May 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=59800 The variables of this question are laid out to help you make the best wakeboard choice.

The post Cable Park Wakeboard vs. Boat Wakeboard appeared first on Wakeboarding Mag.

Cable park board versus boat board
Cable wakeboards and boat wakeboards have some differences to optimize them for their riding conditions. Courtesy Liquid Force / Composite by Kevin Falvey

A question often asked is: What is the difference between a wakeboard used at a cable park and one used to ride while towed behind a boat?

Naturally advanced riders can make any board work in a given set of circumstances. And different riders often have different definitions of what is, “right.” That said, check out this comparison of wakeboards. It may help guide your next wakeboard purchase.

The main difference between a cable wakeboard and a boat wakeboard lies in their design, which is optimized for the different pulling methods (cable systems vs. boats) and the types of obstacles encountered.

Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:

Wakeboard for the cable park
This Liquid Force Peak features an aggressive 3-stage rocker, and other elements making it a great cable park board. Courtesy Liquid Force

Base and Construction

Cable Wakeboards

  • Built with durable, grind-friendly bases (often called sintered or P-Tex bases) to withstand contact with obstacles like rails and kickers in cable parks.
  • Typically feature reinforced sidewalls to endure more impacts.

Boat Wakeboards

  • Designed for use behind a boat, with less need for impact resistance from obstacles.
  • Usually have glossier bases optimized for speed and glide on the water rather than durability.

Rocker Type

Cable Boards

  • Often have a continuous or hybrid rocker for smoother, more predictable performance on obstacles and in the park.

Boat Boards

  • Tend to have a 3-stage rocker, which gives a more aggressive pop off the wake (since boat wakeboarding focuses more on air tricks off the wake).

Flex

Cable Boards

  • Usually have more flex, especially in the tips, to aid with presses on rails and soften landings.

Boat Boards

  • Typically stiffer, providing better edge control and pop off the wake.

Fins and Channels

Cable Boards

  • Have minimal or removable fins, and often flatter channels, to avoid getting caught on rails and other features.

Boat Boards

  • Use deeper fins and aggressive channels for better tracking and edge hold at higher boat speeds.

We Test: Costa Grand Catalina Sunglasses https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/gear/we-test-costa-grand-catalina-sunglasses/ Wed, 11 Sep 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.wakeboardingmag.com/?p=59054 Featuring detachable side shields, these classically-styled aviators offer an iconic look with high-end performance.

Costa has long been a leader in sunglasses’ design and performance. One of their recent releases harkens back to vintage designs, while adding a slew of new high-tech capabilities. The Grand Catalina frames bring back a classic Costa design from the 80s, while adding the capabilities of polarized 580 G (glass) lenses and a whole lot more.

Aside from the retro aviator design, the calling card of the Grand Catalina frames has to be the removable side shields. The pieces are easy to pop in and out, and add a lot of protection from the periphery – a big plus for those spending long days on the water, in the sun, or both. The side shields integrate seamlessly with the arms, and the rounded form at the top offers protection from above, as well. So not only do the side shields look good, but they add serious functionality, making the Grand Catalinas an extremely versatile pair of sunglasses.

Costa Grand Catalina
Costa Grand Catalina: Classic aviator styling combined with the protection, visibility and scratch resistance of a modern lens. Garrett Cortese

Of course, you can’t ignore the styling. The classic aviator look never gets old because, like a good pair of jeans or an Eames chair, it just works. The Grand Catalinas don’t just look good, though, they fit beautifully. The frames are lightweight, thanks to Costa’s advanced construction, and soft pads in the bridge prevent slippage and fatigue if you have to keep them on all day. The nose pads are also adjustable, for total customization. Spring hinges in the arms keep the Grand Catalinas locked to your head, while eliminating the stretched-out, loose feeling that can occur in sunglasses after lots of use.

I spent multiple days on the water in a variety of environments wearing a pair of Grand Catalinas equipped with 580 G “blue mirror” lenses. Simply put, they’re awesome, and work best in bright conditions. They are ultra-clear, while the polarization adds a little “boost” to the view, and makes looking into the water very easy. The design of Costa’s 580 G lenses is also scratch resistant – a big bonus for those of us prone to putting our glasses down where they can end up getting scuffed.

The only downside for me with the Grand Catalinas has more to do with my giant head than the design or performance of the sunglasses themselves. Because my head is on the wider side (I wear a 7-5/8 size hat), the side shields press against my temples when installed. It’s not uncomfortable at all, but definitely noticeable. It hasn’t detracted from me using the Grand Catalinas on a regular basis, both out on the boat and around town, but I’m not installing the side shields every time I wear them.

Overall, with the Grand Catalinas, Costa has created another winner. As boaters, anglers and watermen of all types continue to seek out eyewear options that offer high-end performance and a great, classic look, many different brands have strived to bridge that gap. Costa’s Grand Catalina frames may just be the Golden Gate.

Wakeboard bindings were once little more than a metal plate, minimal thickness of foam, and a rubbery strap to rein in your heel. Today there are a wide variety of supportive, boot-style binding choices on the market. Here are three aimed at beginner to expert riders.

Entry-Level: Hyperlite Remix

The Wrap: Designed to accommodate a variety of foot sizes yet still offer some degree of support, open-toe bindings such as the Remix are ideal when sharing a board among family and friends. Look for a molded EVA footbed, floating tongue, and dual lace zones that can open wide and then cinch down to separately secure your foot and ankle.

The Trap: Wide range of adjustability comes at the expense of individualized support and comfort. All but casual riders will likely be looking to upgrade to a more advanced binding.

Price: $249; scheels.com

Midrange: Hyperlite Team X

The Wrap: A traditional plate-style binding that retains great range of motion, closed-toe bindings such as the Team X offer midrange support while still remaining somewhat sharable for riders of roughly similar foot length and ability. An internal ankle harness locks down the heel. Heat-moldable liners dial in the comfort and provide a more customized fit.

The Trap: Minimal size ranges means no more widespread sharing on the boat. Pricing substantially higher than entry-level offerings.

Price: $425; hyperlite.com or $399; Scheels.com

High-End: System Lowback Binding/Freepress System Boots

The Wrap: A boot/binding setup similar to snowboarding, System components offer exceptional feel and control. Bindings minimize toe and heel lift and are adjustable on the fly. Heat-moldable boots provide greater comfort and allow riders to stand directly atop the board without plastic or other hard material underfoot.

The Trap: It’s a significant high-end investment that’s not really shareable. Freepress boots offer less flexibility.

Price: System Binding $235; Freepress Boots $400; hyperlite.com
