When it comes to premium watersports-specific boats—think top luxury, killer tech and jaw-dropping performance—there are plenty of choices. One not to be ignored is the Ultré 23ZX from Texas-based Tigé. Whether you’re running it, riding in it, shredding behind it, or looking at it from across the lake, this 23-footer hits with a slick combination of beauty and beast.

Pronounced “ultra,” the Ultré ZX is just that in every facet. Its simplified badging, clean lines and custom details scream “means business.” Once on board, the luxury and innovative features are instantly noticeable. The premium vinyl and signature stitching, along with the complementary patterns of the soft-touch flooring, help set the Ultré ZX apart. Padding is supple and bolsters reside in all the right spots—your crew will appreciate the curved backs of the wraparound seating. The aft bench flips into the cockpit to become rear-facing, and the back can be lowered to act as a tabletop. But Tigé also provides a unique, hidden table that slides out from under the walk-through.

A special feature of the wraparound seating is what Tigé has dubbed its FastFlip Co-Captain’s Chair. Resembling seating found aboard sterndrive runabouts, it features a convertible backrest that can face either forward or aft. Both options proved comfortable, and a bolster adds support when facing forward. A touchscreen beside the seat allows the co-captain to control the Ultré’s audio, lighting and even a heater—one of the coolest features that sits at their feet, literally.

A built-in electric cooler adds both luxury and convenience to the Ultré ZX. The UltréChill keeps your beverages and snacks cold and fresh, and can continue running with the engine off. (The cooler shuts down if the battery levels drop to a certain point.) Positioned just right and upholstered, it serves as a footrest for a co-captain facing forward. Before decrying this cooler as taking away a common wakeboat storage spot, know that Tigé has integrated ample space beneath the seat.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX cockpit
With a very high gunwale, the Ultré 23ZX offers added comfort and security when cruising. Garrett Cortese

With a very high gunwale, the Ultré 23ZX offers added comfort and security when cruising. This deep cockpit also helps maximize storage. The space beneath the wraparound seating rates as some of the deepest I’ve seen aboard a watersports boat—in fact, it was large enough for my 6-foot-1-inch, 190-pound self to crawl inside and close myself in. So, yes, the space is large enough to hide a body.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX accents
Luxury appointments are found throughout. Garrett Cortese

Speaking of bodies, several can lounge comfortably in the bow, which is a hybrid between traditional and pickle-fork styles. Tigé carried the Ultré 23ZX’s depth through the bow, making it one of the more secure-feeling I’ve seen. The space is customizable to become a playpen or have a padded walk-through, while the backrest at the front also flips down, revealing a padded step to aid in boarding over the bow. Storage abounds underneath, and a dedicated locker handles the anchor.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX transom seats
The dual-facing transom seats are extremely comfortable. Garrett Cortese

For the indecisive loungers on the boat—the Ultré 23ZX can accommodate up to 16—Tigé has integrated dual-facing transom seats. Above the engine compartment, you can flip up a backrest and face into the wraparound seating area. Or flip the opposite section up and face the water. Both proved very comfortable. The padded walk-through bisecting the transom lounge provides easy swim-platform access, where you can find two more comfy seats. The high gunwales make for a big step down to the platform, but Tigé offers an optional step that floats just above the swim platform. Push a button and the rear section of the power platform lowers into the water, making entry and exit much more comfortable. A giant surf locker underneath the transom seats offers room for multiple boards and other pieces of gear.

Tigé Ultré 23ZX wakeboarding
The Go System gets riders set up quickly. Garrett Cortese

When it comes to riding, the Ultré 23ZX delivers, thanks in large part to its 7,400-pound dry weight, 4,000 pounds of internal ballast and the integration of the TAPS 3T system. The wakes and waves are clean, crisp and fun for all levels because riders can adjust them easily to suit a variety of skills and styles. Making those adjustments is as simple as a finger tap. The helm of the Ultré ZX is outfitted with one large touchscreen, which keeps the sightlines clean without losing any functionality. Tigé calls it the Go System. Simply tap the “Go” icon on the screen, select your discipline (wakeboard, surf, foil or ski) and your level, and the boat does the rest. The head-up display in the center of the screen features mph, rpm and other essential data, while other functions “float” on the sides. Simply drag in the icon and you have access to make adjustments as needed. Stern-thruster controls come via a toggle switch at the front of the throttle, while a second toggle by the thumb allows for redundant control of TAPS. It’s all simple and highly effective.

Luxury wakeboat buyers can compare the Ultré 23ZX to MasterCraft’s redesigned XStar 23, which has its own unique luxury and tech features, but comes at a higher price (starting at $395,000). What makes the Ultré 23ZX stand out among its other premium-class peers are not only the features that can’t be found on other boats, but also how much you wish other boats had them after using them. And if you’re worried a 23-foot boat isn’t enough for you, don’t fret. Tigé also offers the Ultré ZX in a 25-footer.

Heyday H20 ready for wake sports
The H20 has big advantages with its smaller size. Garrett Cortese

Given the growth of the inboard watersports boat market over the last decade, it should come as no surprise that the trend of offering bigger and bigger models has only—for lack of a better term—grown. Manufacturers such as Centurion, Malibu and MasterCraft all offer models 26 feet or longer. But does bigger always mean better? Not necessarily. Fortunately, for prospective buyers who need something smaller, there are still plenty of options to choose from. Most brands offer at least one model 21 feet or under, and several offer multiple. While the advantages of larger boats specific to wakeboarding and wakesurfing are fairly obvious, such as more room for friends, larger ballast systems for superior waves, etc., there are a lot of benefits to smaller boats.

The most obvious advantage is the purchase price. Generally, a 20- to 22-foot model is going to cost significantly less than a 25- to 26-footer. The second biggest economic advantage for smaller boats is fuel efficiency. Less fuel consumed means more wallet savings. Plus, if you’re a boater who needs to trailer your boat to and from your favorite riding spots, a smaller boat means better gas mileage for the tow vehicle (and quite possibly a cheaper vehicle that doesn’t require such a large tow rating).

Along with being easier to tow, smaller boat models are much easier to store, especially if you need to keep one in a standard-size garage. Every model listed in this roundup features a collapsible tower, making it ideal for storing in tighter places. The smaller size also presents an advantage when it comes to handling. A 20-foot boat is going to be easier to maneuver than its 26-foot sibling. MasterCraft’s XT20 is 6 feet, 5 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and 1,800 pounds lighter than the Yacht Certified X26, so you know it’s going to be less demanding to handle in tight quarters.

With all the advancements in hull design and wave-shaping technologies, the smaller boats in the watersports segment are able to produce better wakes and waves than ever before. In years past, buyers who wanted clean surf waves with plenty of push for all the riders in their family often had to go for the bigger boats that displaced more water. In 2024, that’s not always the case. All the boats in our list can create waves that cater to all types of different riding levels and styles. You won’t be able to bring 16 or 17 of your closest friends; however, you can have a blast on the water with everybody you can bring, and you’ll likely save some money while doing it.

Here’s a look at nine of the best wakeboats under 21 feet.

MasterCraft XT20

The MasterCraft XT20 has been redesigned from the bottom up and MasterCraft have put a lot of time into making sure this 20-footer packs a punch more in line with bigger models. Equipped with the revamped SurfStar system, the XT20 can push out sizeable waves with plenty of push, along with clean, symmetrical wakeboarding wakes. The convertible rear bench and transom lounge seats–built with MasterCraft’s triple density foam and ultra-comfy vinyl–ensure everybody onboard will be comfortable. The XT line is one of the most customizable in the market, so buyers can opt to go more minimal with a new build, or take this 20-footer to the next level with all the bells and whistles MasterCraft have to offer.

Heyday H20

All-new for 2023, the Heyday H20 builds on the success of its bigger sibling, the H22. Heyday has carved out a solid spot in the marketplace by offering great performance at a very affordable price. The H20 is the only boat in this lineup without an automated surf system, but it doesn’t necessarily need one – it still puts up a solid wave, and that can be added to with an optional suction-cup-mounted wave shaper device. Two features we love about the H20: the rear-facing transom seats are an awesome way to watch the action on the water–no other manufacturer has seats like these, and the power-folding swimstep. This makes the H20 even easier to store in a garage or other tight spaces.

Moomba Mondo

Moomba have consistently upgraded the performance and capabilities of their models, allowing buyers to get solid performance at a more budget-friendly price. The 20-foot Moomba Mondo is the smallest in the lineup, but thanks to an impressive 3,700 pounds of ballast, the Swell Surf System plates and AutoWake technology, it kicks up seriously fun wakes and waves. AutoWake is key for the Mondo, as the system utilizes onboard sensors to monitor the boat’s running attitude. It will automatically adjust the Swell Surf System and ballast as needed in order to keep the wake or wave in an optimal spot. This takes a ton of the guesswork out of setting the Mondo up, which is great for new users or veteran riders alike, because it means less time trying to figure things out and more time on the water having fun.

Axis A20

The Axis A20 has been a staple in the Axis lineup since the brand’s inception, and it saw a major refresh in 2020. An improved running surface, combined with a more comfortable ride make the A20 a great option for families getting into the watersports scene. The ease-of-use of the Surf Gate and Power Wedge III systems for wakeboarding and wakesurfing can’t be overstated. The A20’s versatility make it great for riders just learning to get up or those looking to add more advanced tricks to their bag.

Centurion Fi21

The Centurion Fi21 is the smallest boat in the Centurion line, but it still prides itself on the wave-making performance Centurion is known for. At 5,100 pounds, the Fi21 is the heaviest in this group (tied with the MasterCraft XT20), and combined with its whopping 4,750 pounds of ballast (by far the most in this group), it can displace a lot of water. Featuring Centurion’s acclaimed Opti-V hull for a running surface, that means riders are getting clean, powerful waves with a large pocket and plenty of push. The QuickSurf Pro plates at the transom ensure the waves stay consistent and fun, while allowing for limitless customization for riders of any skill level.

Malibu 21 LX

Introduced in 2022, the Malibu 21 LX is a model that takes influence from several previous Malibu models and molds them into a multisport, family-fun machine. The hybrid bow is one easy-to-spot representation of this–the 21 LX has lines similar to a traditional bow, but the interior area is shaped like a bigger pickle fork bow, allowing more room for passengers. Buyers can choose between two hull types, Wake Plus and Diamond. Wake Plus caters to those looking more toward wakesurfing and wakeboarding performance, while Diamond is geared toward ultimate versatility for users who also want to water ski more aggressively behind the 21 LX. As for the wakes and waves, the combination of Surf Gate and Power Wedge III ensure the 21 LX can be quickly and easily tweaked for all different levels and styles of riding. Opt in for the Surf Band remote and the rider can control those systems from their wrist while riding.

Nautique GS20

The Nautique GS20 underwent a complete redesign and is all-new for 2023. Touted as a true crossover performer, it can pull a fun wakesurf session with solid waves and then in a matter of minutes tow a skier through the slalom course. The GS20’s hull takes design cues from its Ski Nautique and Super Air Nautique G23 cousins, allowing it to perform better than you’d think in both extremes for a 20-foot V-drive. With Nautique Surf System plates tooled into the transom of the boat, the GS20 can quickly kick up solid wakesurfing waves that can be fine-tuned for beginners to more advanced riders. NSS plates are also much smaller than other surf system plates on the market, allowing for quick transfers from side to side when wakesurfing.

Advantages of Smaller Watersports Boats

While the advantages of larger boats specific to wakeboarding and wakesurfing are fairly obvious – more room for passengers, larger ballast systems for bigger waves, etc. – there are a lot benefits to smaller boats.

  • Price: The most obvious advantage is the purchase price. A 20-to-22-foot model is generally going to cost significantly less than a 25-26-footer.
  • Fuel Efficiency: The second biggest economic advantage for smaller boats is fuel efficiency. Less fuel consumed means more savings in the wallet. Plus, if you’re a boater who needs to trailer your boat to/from your favorite riding spots, a smaller boat means better gas mileage for the vehicle you’re towing with (and quite possibly a cheaper vehicle that doesn’t require such a large tow rating).
  • Easier Towing & Storage: Along with being easier to tow, smaller boat models are much easier to store, especially if you need to keep one in a standard-sized garage. Every model listed in this roundup features a collapsible tower, making them ideal for storing in tighter places. The smaller size also presents an advantage when it comes to handling. A 20-foot boat is going to be easier to maneuver than its 26-foot sibling. MasterCraft’s brand-new XT20 is 6 feet 5 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and 1,800 pounds lighter than the yacht-certified X26, so you know it’s going to be less cumbersome to handle in tight quarters.
  • Clean Wake & Waves: With all the advancements in hull design and wave-shaping technologies, the smaller boats in the watersports segment are able to produce better wakes and waves than ever before. In years past, buyers who really wanted clean surf waves with plenty of push for all the riders in their family often times had to go for the bigger boats that displaced more water. In 2023, that’s no longer the case. All the boats in the list below can create waves that cater to all types of different riding levels and styles. While you won’t be able to bring 16 or 17 of your closest friends with you, you will still be able to have a blast on the water with everybody you can bring, and you’ll likely save some money while doing it.

Tigé boats recently added to the acclaimed RZX line in a little, but big, way. The 20-foot RZX20 takes its cues from its bigger siblings, but delivers everything in a more compact package. You still get the great wakes and waves, but in a boat that’s a bit more fuel efficient, easier to tow and stow, and more nimble on the water. Rumor has it that after spending some time on the new, smaller edition RZX, team surfer Josh Kerr and family are going to be using the RZX20 as their next boat of choice. You can get more info at the Tigé website here.

Abilene, TXTige Boats is honored to share the #tigelove and give back to charities around the world heading into the holiday season. The charitable funds that Tige has raised are directly supporting WakeWorld’s Toys for Tots, Hurricane Harvey victims, Higher Ground Sun Valley, Fly Fishing for Veterans, and various other non-profits. “It is a privilege working with these outstanding organizations and we’re happy to extend a helping hand where it’s needed,” stated Charlie Pigeon, Founder and CEO of Tige Boats.

Tige Boats offered a 2018 custom-build R21 in WakeWorld’s U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Auction. WakeWorld ran online auctions of donated items from companies and individuals in order to buy toys for underprivileged kids that otherwise may not be getting any gifts during the holiday season. Tige Boats has offered a boat for many years in the Toys for Tots auction, but this was a record fundraising year. The R21 found its new home well over the reserve price, all of which supports a great Christmas for many children.

“We are very thankful for Tige’s donation of the 2018 R21,” said David Williams of WakeWorld. “It was awesome to see a bidding war that benefits children. This donation broke all of our records from our past 13 years of hosting the Toys for Tots Auction.”

The contribution to High Ground Sun Valley will give disabled individuals the opportunity to experience recreation and outdoor sports at their highest level of independence. Fly Fishing for Veterans (Project Healing Waters) is a unique, community-based, non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to the physical and psychological rehabilitation of active duty military personnel and veterans with disabilities through the therapeutic benefits of the sport of fly-fishing.

After the disaster and destruction Hurricane Harvey unleashed on Texas, Tige Boats also stepped in to help out their home state by selling a t-shirt that represented Texas being stronger than the storm, or “Texas Strong.” 100% of the purchased t-shirt was donated to hurricane relief resulting in a significant amount that Tige Boats was proud to donate, and help their fellow Texans. Tige Owners, dealers and helpful citizens throughout the world came together to purchase a t-shirt in support of the devastation that unfolded. The Texas Strong t-shirts are still available for sale and you can continue donating by clicking here to visit the Tige gear store.

Tige Boats is offering yet another charitable contribution with a custom-built 2018 Tige R21 in the West Texas Rehabilitation Center auction that begins this month. The nationally respected non-profit physical rehabilitation center will use the money to provide quality care for patients with disabilities regardless of their financial circumstance. The auction will be announced soon on the Tige Boats Facebook page.

So far, the total proceeds are well over $60,000.

The Tigé RZX2 isn’t just Tigé’s flagship boat for do-it-all versatility, it is also one of the most impressive and versatile boats in the game. Period. Not only can you wakeboard behind it at a variety of skill levels, but you can also create world-class wakesurf waves, and you can even slalom ski. Yes, slalom ski. We’re here to talk about how the RZX2 performs as a wakeboard boat though, and that’s what I’m going to tell you about.

With the stock tanks full, which is an impressive 3,000 pounds of subfloor ballast, and the extra plug-and-play at 75 percent, the wake reached pro levels (i.e., big enough for pros to do all their tricks). The wake is clean with plenty of kick. It can get a little steep with more weight, but that isn’t a bad thing if you know how to work your edges and edging technique. Plus, with the ease of the TAPS 3 system, the steepness and shape can be adjusted to your liking.

For the settings I rode at, the wake is solid with a lot of volume, so it doesn’t crumble as you edge up it. Drain the ballast and slow the boat down, and the RZX2 continues to show its versatility. The wake becomes much more mellow — a great wake for beginner and intermediate riders getting used to the water and catching air.

What’s also unique and cool about the RZX2 is that it is 22 feet. Most boats producing these kinds of wakes are 23 feet or bigger. Thanks to its hull design, ballast and integrated TAPS 3 system, the RZX2 can pack a lot of punch into a smaller bite.
