Already one of the best cable parks in America, KC Watersports is set for even bigger and better things in 2011. A new ownership group that includes Liquid Force founder Tony Finn, San Diego entrepreneur and wakesurf addict Marco Thompson, Shelly Brown and owner/operator Sean Hollonbeck have instituted a slate of improvements this year, including reconditioned and enhanced structures and an upgraded pro shop with all-new Liquid Force, Sanuk and GoPro gear. KC Watersports also has an expanded beach area and a wider variety of grub at the on-site snack shack. “We are continuing the great traditions of one of the pioneers in cables, Mike Olson, while improving the park at the same time,” Hollonbeck says. “Come out and ride.”

Camp Fooshee

2010’s Best Wake Park Rider Tom Fooshee will host a camp on Aug. 1-5, the day before the final stop of Liquid Force’s 2011 Free for All tour, at KC Watersports. At Camp Fooshee, beginner sessions are structured to get new riders comfortable with a slower speed. Advanced riders can learn as much as they want with several rails, kickers and ramps.

Watersports’ 7.5-acre man-made lake is lined by a five-tower Rixen cable system and decked out by a wide range of obstacles, including the new Sanuk booter and GoPro fun box. In fact, there’s a structure for every level of rider to hit.

Liquid Force riders Kevin Henshaw, Grant Roberts and Aaron Reed will be at KC Watersports May 13-15 for the return of Relentless Weekend, which teams pros and local cable shredders in a fun, stress-free atmosphere.

“When scheduling our season’s travels, several of us here at LF mark the Relentless Weekend down on our calendar before all other events,” says Liquid Force’s Don Wallace. “It’s one of the best times to be had all season, and we don’t want to miss it! The beauty of this event is that all abilities are welcome. Whether you’re a first timer on the cable or a seasoned pro, you’re guaranteed to have a blast, learn something new and make some new friends. Year after year, the Relentless Weekend continues to deliver good times.”

The festivities will begin Friday, May 13, with open riding sessions alongside the Liquid Force pro riders from noon-8 p.m. The grill will be fired up all day so make sure to check out the new Snack Shack. The fun will continue on Saturday with an open riding session from 10 a.m.–noon. At noon, the teams will be drawn and competition will begin.

Every rider will work on his new trick with his team captain. At 4 p.m., the judging will begin and each rider will have one attempt to land their new trick. Everything will wrap up on Sunday with another open riding session from noon–8 p.m.

KC Watersports is keeping its Fools Fest tradition going for yet another year. The midewest cable wakeboarding park will kick off the 2011 season with its annual Fools Fest on April 1-3.

“We couldn’t imagine a better opening weekend than continuing the tradition into 2011,” says KC Watersports manager Sean Hollonbeck. “Ski and snowboard season has ended, the weather is changing and riders are ready to hit the water.”

This year, KC Watersports is offering a three-day Foolie Pass, which includes three days of riding, entry fees, a VIP Saturday morning breakfast and a 2011 Fools Fest event t-shirt. The pass also includes entry into any of the events’ six competition categories: beginner, intermediate, advanced, women’s, wakeskate and kneeboard.

Cable park pioneer Mike Olson has sold Kansas City Watersports to an investment group that includes Liquid Force co-founder Tony Finn. Kansas City Watersports was one of the first cable parks in the U.S.

“I didn’t want to sell it to just anybody”, Olsen says. “As a matter of fact, it wasn’t really on the market. However, I am focusing on a new Wake Nation park in Houston and multiple other wake park projects around the country. At the same time, I wanted to keep the great tradition of KCW going. I called Tony, he called a few of his friends that love wakeboarding, and the deal was done. I will still be involved in helping them make KCW as good as it can be.”

“I love cables,” Finn says. “I have ridden at countless cables around the world, and I always have a great time! Also, I love the fact that you don’t have to be rich to wakeboard on a cable. Riding wakeboards at cables is super fun and it opens up our sport to millions of people that wouldn’t normally be able to enjoy wakeboarding! I am really stoked to be involved in Kansas City. KCW has pioneered lots of cool things in the wakeboarding world. We will continue Mike’s great traditions such as the Fools Fest, which of course is on April Fools weekend, Relentless Weekend, Ladies Night, Student night, and Beginners Night. The more cable parks there are in the world the better!”

Serial entrepreneur Marco Thompson is behind the investment group. His background includes one other cable park, four other action sports-related businesses, and a total of 45 start-up companies over the last 35 years. Thompson is an avid wakeboarder.

“I wakeboard and wakesurf in San Diego two times a week,” Thompson says. “Our business vision is to help create 20 cable parks in the next 5 years, and 50 in the next 10 years. A chance to continue the Kansas City Watersports tradition was a great opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

Die-hard wakeboarder Sean Hollonbeck will run the park. Sean, who has managed both small and multimillion-dollar businesses, looks forward to working in a field that he is passionate about.

“This is a job that where you just can’t wait to get out of bed and get to work,” Hollonbeck says. “I get to use my marketing background and draw on the decades of business growth experience Marco brings and the industry knowledge and enthusiasm that only Tony Finn can bring. I am also looking forward to reaching out to our local colleges and high schools, and running camps alongside our world class roster of Pros.”
